and
options for treatment using mind-body therapies.

What is important to the
patient with endometriosis?
Women with endometriosis often
face a mixture of confusion, fear, grief, anger and self-guilt. Importance
of an open, understanding relationship between doctor and patient.

Endometriosis and pain
Thorough review of ways
endometriosis can cause pain, other disorders that can mimic endometriosis
pain, and overview of pain relief treatments. "Health-related quality of
life is significantly affected by endometriosis when pain is present. This
involves an inner relationship between the mind, body, general health
perception, bodily function, anxiety, depression, emotion, and social
functioning. The health care team must avoid what has been called "gynevision",
i.e. using a narrow focus on organic pathology."

Short term psychological
outcome of surgical intervention for endometriosis
In this very limited,
uncontrolled study, 37 women who underwent laparoscopic treatment of their
endometriosis had significantly decreased pain, depression and anxiety at
three months post surgery.

Importance of lay organizations
for coping with endometriosis
Responding to an internet
questionnaire, women with endometriosis benefited from connections to
other women with endometriosis. What they wanted most in a support network
was to be listened to and believed, and for their support system to be
knowledgeable about endometriosis and share information.

Treatment of endometriosis
involving a self-help group positively affects patients' perception of
care
In establishing an
Endometriosis Clinic co-operatively between a group of Australian
gynecologists and the Endometriosis Association, a self-help group, 97% of
women felt that the consultation with a counselor form the Endometriosis
Association was a major source of satisfaction. There was high demand for
this concept of integration.

MAST scores, alcohol
consumption, and gynecological symptoms in endometriosis patients
Women with endometriosis and
also women with other gynecological disorders scored significantly higher
than controls on an alcoholism screening test. However, when faced with
active gynecologic symptoms, women with endometriosis turned more
frequently to alcohol than women with other gynecologic disorders.

Immunobiology of endometriosis
Review of humoral and cellular
immunology of endometriosis. On one hand, defective immune surveillance
allows endometrial cells to implant on pelvic structures, while on the
other hand endometriotic implants exhibit a hyper immune response, causing
increased inflammation and scarring.

Immune abnormalities in
endometriosis compromising fertility in IVF-ET patients
Endometriosis patients
exhibited several alloimmune and autoimmune differences compared with
women with unexplained infertility without endometriosis, including a
significant increase in antiphospholipid antibodies (48% vs. 30.6%).
Immune evaluation is recommended by authors prior to assisted
reproduction.

Increased natural killer cell
activities in patients treated with gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist
Endometriosis patients have a
known decrease in natural killer (NK) cell activity. Treatment with a GnRH
antagonist significantly increased NK cell activity (37.7% to 50.8%),
independent of serum estradiol level.

Cancer issues
[Cancer related to endometriosis is extremely uncommon.
However, the importance of exploring this relationship is that
much of the research being done now on cancer with
regards to immune therapy and decreasing blood supply has already been
shown to be of benefit to endometriosis patients, and will be used more
extensively in the near future.]

and less chance of residual tumor than ovarian cancer not associated with
endometriosis.
